I have a huge creative rush in the springtime, I call it “the flood”. During this time, I typically come up with at least five song ideas a week, sometimes in a day. I always put the date at the bottom of the finished lyric sheet and when I look back at the catalog the trend is clear - the overwhelming majority are dated April through June,
Often during the flood I’ll wake up around 6:30 in the morning, grab some coffee and pick up a guitar. Within minutes I’ll have the structure of a song that I made up on the spot. I mumble the melody on the fly and then as I subconsciously blurt out intelligible words they create a basic theme. I then connect the dots to form a story. My best lyrics practically write themselves in under 30 minutes, like they were buried deep inside my brain just waiting for their time to get out.
For whatever reason, this year the flood started well in advance of spring, which is weird because a massive polar blast is descending upon Austin as I type. Early next week we’re projected to get the most snow (4-7”) that we’ve had since 1969. We’ll see what happens, but in the meantime I’ll take what I can get and will be plugging away on new song ideas that the band will undoubtedly take to the next level. - Jason
