the bell diver

The sea doesn’t care who you are. Rich or poor, there’s no north star. It makes no difference at all. I miss you most this time of year. How you always faced your fears every day before you lost it all. Last saw you on a Tuesday, your shift began at noon. As the bellows started to breathe away, you waved and said “I’ll be home soon.” We were just trying to make ends meet. We talked the dangers in the streets, but day in, day out, we dove. Figured we’d stay on one more year, isolated in the sphere. Building futures as the bells took their toll. Last saw you on a Tuesday, your shift began at noon. As the bellows started to breathe away, you waved and said “I’ll be home soon.” Pressurized in the bell, conditions were a living hell. But we pressed on with the work the same. The lucky ones would decompress slowly to avoid the bends. Either death or paralyzing pain. Last saw you on a Tuesday, your shift began at noon. As the bellows started to breathe away, you said “I’ll be home soon”. I imagine you in a fantasy, somewhere in the deep. Surrounded by new family, but with memories you keep. Diving down beneath the sea tests our own humanity. But curious minds, they rise above the deep.

between the lines

We’ve been here before, things are getting strange. It’s time for us to make a change. There’s no room in here for this elephant. So I’m headed east to your place, for this convo we need face to face. I can’t believe those last few texts you sent. I want to try to make this work despite all the work it takes to try. We’re falling fast, let’s make one more diving catch. Let’s change from it’s not you, it’s me, to it’s just me and you. Let’s sit down and see where we stand, ‘cause I’m reading between the lines. As I head down the road between the lines, I’m getting more nervous with each passing mile. I’d be a little drunk if I didn’t have to drive. Slowing my roll as I turn on your street, planning every word, so carefully. It’s moments like these that make us feel alive. I want to try to make this work despite all the work it takes to try. We’re falling fast, let’s make one more diving catch. Let’s change from it’s not you, it’s me, to it’s just me and you. Let’s sit down and see where we stand, ‘cause I’m reading between the lines.

working title

It’s easy to feel rudderless in this sea of change. Miss the silver lining as the night bleeds into day. The freeze of fear is something that I understand. Scared of moving forward, with heart beating in my hand. I can’t live my life with a working title. I can’t spend my time with my head in a hole. I’ve made my share of mistakes in this life. It’s just like me to try to catch a falling knife. It there a red thread in this twist of fate? Or am I the one to over-complicate? I can’t live my life with a working title. I can’t spend my time with my head in a hole. In this life there are never any guarantees, it takes a balance of big plans and floating in the breeze. It’s my story, I’ll act it out from center stage. And if I wonder what comes next, I’ll just turn another page. From here on out, I’m weaving fabric from the fray. And I’ll point my compass north if I’m lost along the way. I can’t live my life with a working title. I can’t spend my time with my head in a hole.

on the mend

I just need another one for the road. To take off the edge, you know, lighten the load. Cutting deep, just so I can feel something in a heightened mode. So it goes. From down on my knees, to cool as a breeze, I’m on the mend. This is the hand for me to double down. I can always come back in another round. Just one more hit, and then I swear that I will quit. I just need a shot in the arm. What’s the harm? From down on my knees, to cool as a breeze, I’m on the mend. I’ve seen the light, please don't hurt my heart tonight. Pins and needles, and razor blades. A life of excess, I wanna know your name. I’ve seen the light, please don't hurt my heart tonight

carolina

I’ve lived a hard life filled with sex and booze. I’ve been to hell and back on Sunday, I’ve got nothing more to lose. I use my days to contemplate the demons that I’ve faced. My reflection tells the story through the lines that time has traced. Leave the light on Carolina. The world’s gone black without you by my side. In a sky of white, I hope to find you. In the end everything’s gonna be alright. They all came back for love like mine, but I’ll tell you this. You’ve left this hollowness inside me, and it’s only you I miss. I won’t stop until I feel the kindness of your skin. Until we’re together again, oh lord, please forgive me for my sins. Leave the light on Carolina. The world’s gone black without you by my side. In a sky of white, I hope to find you. In the end everything’s gonna be alright.
